A New Modern City Center for Erbil – Downtown Erbil
It is known that Erbil, the Kurdistan capital in northern Iraq, is one of the oldest cities in the world. The ancient city, the Citadel, was built on a 33-meter mound and forms the heart of modern-day Erbil which has grown in concentric circles all around the ancient settlement.
Downtown Erbil is an ambitious plan for the construction of a new, modern, state-of-the-art city center in the north-west of the city and within easy reach of Erbil International Airport, which is the safe gateway of the Kurdistan Region to the world. The $3-billion new Erbil center is going to be built on a 541,000 square meter area in one of the most prestigious parts of the city at the conjunction of Gulan and Ainkawa Streets.
The project was designed and will be constructed by the Dubai-based Emaar Properties, the renowned land developers who have also constructed the world-famous Burj Khalifa Tower in Dubai. The architectural design of Downtown Erbil is a real masterpiece that includes 276 functional apartments in the two Claren residential towers, a lot more residential units in low-rise buildings, a large shopping mall, plenty of retail outlets, luxury hotels, and a central business district with several office towers. The project also features a large number of green walking areas, fountains and parks for the recreation of residents and visitors alike.
Downtown Erbil will also act as a leisure, relaxation and entertainment option for all Erbilians – and not only. The project will attract visitors to the city and it will eventually become the economic heart of Erbil.
The project will be constructed in 3 phases and as the Kurdistan Prime Minister, Mr. Nechirvan Barzani said in the commencement ceremony in October 2013 that Downtown Erbil will create 35,000 new jobs, contribute to the increase of the family income of the Kurds, and make everyone happy and proud for the growth of their Region.
