There’s a lot of stuff in our world that seems fairly commonplace in this day and age. You don’t ever really stop to think how long these things have been around. Here’s a look at some stuff that wasn’t around 10 years ago.
Tesla’s first car (2008)
Although engineers founded Tesla in 2003, their first vehicle wasn’t released until 2008. The first model of the electric Roadster cost $100,000 and could reach top speeds of 125 mph. Now the Roadster costs over $200,000 and reaches 250 mph.
Crowdsourcing websites are now a pretty common way that people get financial backing for everything from inventions to medical support. Indiegogo was one of the first crowdsourcing sites launched back in 2008, followed by Kickstarter (2009), GoFundMe (2010), and Patreon (2013). This type of platform has made it extremely easy for people to donate and show support.
Doritos Locos Tacos
This may seem random, but Taco Bell fans know that this orange-powdered invention was a game changer. The specialty taco launched back in 2012 and is now a regular menu item.
Interactive smart speakers
Speakers that respond to voice commands have become pretty useful in the home. It allows users to play music, look up things on the internet, make calls, and lots of other features.
The age of convenient apps started when Tinder first launched in 2012. Bumble followed suit in 2014. People now have access to potential matches at the tip of their fingers.
The beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe
The release of ‘Iron Man’ in May 2008 set off the earliest stages of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. ‘The Incredible Hulk’ (2008), ‘Thor’ (2011), and ‘Captain America’ (2011) followed and Marvel characters were first brought together in ‘The Avengers’ back in 2012.
Uber and other ride-hailing services
Uber was founded in March of 2009 as a different type of black-car service. The main reason it took off is due to the innovative way people could request a ride without calling or scheduling a car. Other ride services like Lyft started popping up a few years later.
The first iPad was released in April of 2010, which is almost ten years after Microsoft had invented its version of the tablet. Although it initially faced some criticism, it became a hit and is now a fairly common item in many business and home settings.
Apple announced the first smartwatch in 2014. The useful features made it a hit, and watch companies soon followed suit making their own versions.
Instagram first launched in 2010 and is one of the most popular social media apps today. Facebook bought Instagram back in 2012 for $1 billion.
DNA tests sold retail
23andMe was awarded the best invention of the year by TIME Magazine back in 2008. The consumer DNA testing company was founded in 2006 to help people understand and know more about their background. Although originally launched in 2007, the product didn’t take off until 2008 when the price was reduced from $1,000 to $399. It’s crazy to think about that now, as the kits are now under $150.
