Google’s Shopping experience has gotten a big upgrade — one that turns the tech giant’s various products into one seamless shopping portal. The company has introduced a universal shopping cart that allows you to purchase products from thousands of merchants across its products. In the US, the feature is now live in Search, Assistant and the redesigned Shopping tab, which now features filters, as well product videos and reviews. Later this year, the cart will also make its way to Google Images and even YouTube. And it doesn’t come as a surprise: Google has been testing shopping links under YouTube videos for a couple of weeks now.
Say, you run a search query for headphones: a blue cart icon will indicate the items you can buy directly from Google properties with your Google account. The purchasable items will show up as part of your results, and clicking on the cart icon will take you to the big G’s checkout page, unlike ads which take you to retailers’ websites. “With this new experience, we’re merging the best of Google Express with Google Shopping,” the company said in its announcement. Your purchase will be backed by a Google guarantee, which means you can contact the company if your order is late or if you come across other issues.
The universal cart feature is now available on Assistant and the Shopping tab in France, as well. Unfortunately, Google doesn’t have any plans to bring it to other regions at the moment.
Google will also start showing whether an item is available for pick-up in store within a shopping ad. You can choose something that’s available for pick-up today, for instance, if you need a particular item as soon as possible and can’t wait for delivery. Some options might only be available for pick-up in a few days or so, however, if they still need to be delivered to the store near your location.
